What is a Danish folk college?

Danish folk colleges are a unique concept and part of the non-formal educational system in Denmark. Classes are based on dialogue and mutual learning between teachers and students. The students stay at the college during the course. Living at a folk college is very much about intercultural awareness and personal growth. Students are young young people between 18 and 30 years. The colleges aim to attract students who wish to develop their skill and understanding in their particular field of interest and who also wish to develop personally and become more clear about their future direction. Folk colleges are NOT to be compared with universities, academies or professional schools where learning is much more formalized and generally with exams. Read more about Danish folk colleges HERE.

More about this particular folk college

This folk college is located in Northern Jutland in Brønderslev, a town of about 12.000 inhabitants. It focuses on physical education, so you have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of different sports. You will have approx. 15 hours of physical/sports lessons per week and you can choose up to 4 sports as part of your schedule including badminton, soccer, spinning and adventure sports.

As an AFS student you will be part of the international class. This class focuses on Danish culture, youth culture, pedagogics and the special Danish tradition of democracy. All teachers and a majority of Danish students speak English and all your lessons are conducted in English.

In addition to participating in the international class you will also have some classes together with the Danish students. You will choose yourself which subjects to study and which sports activities to take part in.

As an international student you will quickly start to interact with Danish students, because everybody live, eat and study together. It often results in great friendships across different cultural backgrounds.

The folk college organises optional adventure trips to France and other European countries. If you wish to take part in such trips, the cost is additional and should be paid directly to the college.
