The country's capital and largest city is Dublin, located in the eastern part of the country. About one third of the country's 4.6 million inhabitants live in the Dublin metropolitan area. It borders Northern Ireland and thus the United Kingdom. To the east is the Irish Sea, to the west and south the country is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Ireland has been a member of the European Union since 1973. The majority of the population is committed to the Roman Catholic faith.
